What Is Back Pain?

Back pain can come from a variety of contributing factors, including disc irritation, muscle imbalances, limited mobility, poor movement patterns, or tension surrounding the spine and pelvis. That is why understanding the root cause is such an important part of the recovery process.

Sometimes the discomfort stays localized in the lower back. Other times, it may travel into the hips, glutes, or legs. For some people, it may involve stiffness and tightness, while others may experience weakness, imbalance, or nerve-related symptoms such as sciatica.

What are the symptoms of Back Pain?

Back pain can show differently for everyone. Some people experience a dull ache that never fully goes away, while others may feel sharp discomfort during certain movements or activities.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Tightness or stiffness in the lower back
  • Pain that travels into the hips, glutes, or legs
  • Difficulty bending, lifting, or twisting
  • Muscle spasms or tension
  • Weakness or instability during movement
  • Numbness or tingling associated with sciatica
  • Increased discomfort with sitting, standing, or activity

Many people also notice that back pain impacts their ability to work out, sit comfortably at work, sleep well, or keep up with family and daily responsibilities.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Back Pain?

At Myo-Fit Mobility & Therapy, we focus on identifying why your back pain is happening, not just where it hurts.

Our athletic trainers perform detailed evaluations looking at hip mobility, muscle activation, movement patterns, strength imbalances, and possible nerve involvement. We also assess whether symptoms may be connected to issues such as sciatica or disc irritation.

Once we better understand the root cause, we guide treatment using our three-phase approach:

1. Soften

The first step is helping calm down irritated and restricted tissues. Tight muscles, stiff fascia, and areas with poor blood flow can all contribute to discomfort and limited movement.

To help address this, we may use hands-on techniques such as:

  • Dry needling
  • Cupping
  • Scraping and soft tissue work
  • Mobility-focused manual therapy

The goal during this phase is to reduce tension, improve circulation, and create a better environment for healing and movement.

2. Lengthen

Once tissues begin to loosen and calm down, we focus on restoring mobility and improving flexibility in the areas that have become restricted.

This may involve targeted stretching, mobility drills, and movement-based techniques designed to improve how the hips, spine, and surrounding muscles move together.

Improving mobility often helps reduce compensation patterns that may be contributing to ongoing back discomfort.

3. Strengthen

The final step is building strength and stability so your body can better support movement long term.

We introduce exercises designed to improve muscle activation, correct imbalances, and help support the spine and pelvis more effectively during everyday activities.

This phase is important not only for recovery but also for helping prevent future flare-ups and keeping you active doing the things you love.
