What Is Shoulder Pain?

The shoulder itself does not always cause shoulder pain. In many cases, issues involving the neck, upper back, posture, or surrounding muscles can influence how the shoulder moves and functions. That is why understanding the root cause is such an important part of the recovery process.

Because the shoulder is involved in so many movements throughout the day, even minor limitations can quickly begin affecting work, exercise, sleep, and overall quality of life.

What are the symptoms of Shoulder Pain?

Shoulder pain can present differently depending on the underlying cause and how long symptoms have been present.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Pain or stiffness when lifting the arm
  • Difficulty reaching overhead
  • Weakness during workouts or daily activities
  • Pain while driving or turning the steering wheel
  • Discomfort when getting dressed or drying your hair
  • Tightness through the shoulder, neck, or upper back
  • Reduced range of motion or poor movement quality
  • Pain when lifting children, carrying bags, or doing yard work

Many people also notice that shoulder pain begins to limit the hobbies and activities they enjoy most, whether that means exercising, cycling, lifting weights, or simply staying active with family.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Shoulder Pain?

At Myo-Fit Mobility & Therapy, we focus on identifying why your shoulder pain is happening, not just treating the symptoms.

Our athletic trainers perform detailed evaluations looking at shoulder mobility, posture, muscle activation, movement patterns, and surrounding areas such as the neck and thoracic spine that may be contributing to the issue.

Once we understand the root cause, we guide treatment using our three-phase approach:

1. Soften

The first step is calming down irritated and restricted tissues while improving circulation and tissue quality.

To help accomplish this, we may use:

  • Dry needling
  • Cupping
  • Instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques
  • Hands-on manual therapy

The goal is to reduce tension, improve blood flow, and help create a healthier environment for movement and recovery.

2. Lengthen

Once irritation begins to decrease, we focus on restoring flexibility and mobility in the areas that have become tight or restricted.

This phase may include stretching, mobility work, and movement-based techniques designed to improve how the shoulder, neck, and upper back work together.

3. Strengthen

As healing progresses, we introduce strengthening exercises designed to improve posture, restore stability, and correct movement imbalances contributing to shoulder pain.

The goal is to help you move more comfortably, improve overall function, and return to the activities you enjoy with greater confidence and strength.
