What Is Knee Pain?

For some people, knee discomfort develops gradually over time. Others may notice symptoms after an injury, surgery, long runs, hikes, or repetitive activity. Sometimes the knee may simply feel stiff and achy, while other times it may feel unstable, swollen, or painful during movement.

Because the knee works closely with the hips, glutes, ankles, and surrounding muscles, the root cause is not always isolated to the knee itself. That is why understanding how your body moves as a whole is such an important part of the recovery process.

What are the symptoms of Knee Pain?

Knee pain can present differently depending on the underlying cause and your activity level.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Stiffness or aching when standing up
  • Swelling after activity or exercise
  • Sharp pain around the kneecap or outside of the knee
  • Feelings of instability or weakness
  • Tightness during walking, running, or hiking
  • Difficulty bending, squatting, or climbing stairs
  • Pain after long periods of sitting or standing
  • Reduced confidence during workouts or movement

Many people also notice that knee pain begins interfering with hobbies, exercise routines, work responsibilities, and everyday life.

What Is Our Approach To Fixing / Treating Knee Pain?

At Myo-Fit Mobility & Therapy, we focus on identifying why your knee pain is happening, not just treating the symptoms.

Our athletic trainers evaluate the entire movement system, including the hips, glutes, posture, mobility, muscle activation, and activity demands that may be contributing to stress on the knee.

Once we understand the root cause, we guide treatment using our three-phase approach:

1. Soften

The first step is calming down irritated or unhealthy tissues while improving circulation and tissue quality.

To help accomplish this, we may use:

  • Dry needling
  • Cupping
  • Scraping and soft tissue techniques
  • Hands-on manual therapy

The goal is to reduce tension, improve blood flow, and create a healthier environment for recovery and movement.

2. Lengthen

Next, we focus on restoring mobility and flexibility in areas contributing to imbalance or restriction.

For many people, tight quads, glutes, hips, or surrounding tissues can increase stress on the knee and impact movement efficiency. This phase may include stretching, mobility work, and movement-based techniques to improve how the body moves together.

3. Strengthen

As the knee begins moving better, we introduce strengthening exercises designed to improve stability, support healthy movement patterns, and help the body tolerate activity more efficiently.

The goal is to improve movement quality, reduce flare-ups, and help you confidently return to the activities you enjoy most.
